Fragrance Notes

Why Do Perfume Notes Smell Different on Everyone?
While paper blotters serve as helpful aids for selecting fragrances in department stores, the final decision often rests on how the scent interacts with individual body chemistry. This variance explains why a perfume may delightfully suit one person while appearing somewhat mismatched on another.

So, what's behind the diverse olfactory experiences? Matthew Herman, co-founder of Boy Smells, suggests that fragrance selection draws upon personal experiences and associations with scent notes. These subjective influences shape our sense of smell, influencing how we perceive fragrances.

Furthermore, the skin's pH balance, unique to each individual, can chemically alter the fragrance's aroma. "Your personal body chemistry and skin oils play pivotal roles in scent diffusion," Herman notes. "They can modify the expression of specific notes. Some may detect spiciness upfront, while others may discern a floral dominance. This variability embodies the magic of fragrance."

External factors like diet, medication, and hormonal changes also contribute to scent individuality. Skin type plays a significant role too. "Fragrance comprises oil blends, favouring longevity on oily skin due to better absorption, especially with base notes like wood and musk," Herman explains. Conversely, dry skin struggles to retain scent molecules, necessitating heavier floral notes like tuberose for prolonged fragrance.
Understanding these nuances underscores the personal, dynamic relationship between individuals and their chosen scents.

Types of Perfume Notes: What are Fragrance Families?
Fragrance families serve as a method of categorizing different perfume notes to simplify the classification of a fragrance. Understanding fragrance families provides a starting point in exploring scents. You may have an emotional or sensory connection with a particular genre of scent. You may find you are drawn to citrus, spicy, fruity, or floral families.

Amber: Traditionally, this family is associated with opulent scents influenced by the East. It presents a stark contrast to the fresh family, characterized by its heavier, more sensual nature, often suited for evening wear. Notes such as incense, amber, musk, and spices define this family. It's worth noting that there's been a recent push to rename this family due to its offensive connotations to many.

Chypre: Pronounced "sheep-ra," these fragrances typically feature a woody, mossy accord, incorporating elements like bergamot, oakmoss, patchouli, and labdanum.

Floral: Embracing the ultra-feminine scents of roses, peony, jasmine, tuberose, and lily-of-the-valley, the floral family appeals to those with a preference for floral bouquets. These fragrances may be enriched with spices or sweetened with fruits.

Fresh: This family encompasses a broad spectrum, including citrus, green, and watery scents. Think zesty, refreshing, or cooling aromas like freshly peeled orange, cut grass, or sea spray. Fresh fragrances evoke a sense of cleanliness and typically manifest as Eau de Toilette or Cologne.

Woody: Featuring deeper, moodier notes such as amber, cedar, and sandalwood, woody scents offer a distinct allure.

The olfactory aspect of perfume refers to its scent or aroma, which is perceived through the sense of smell. Perfume is crafted using a combination of various aromatic compounds, also known as fragrance notes, which create a unique olfactory experience. These notes are classified into different categories such as citrus, floral, woody, spicy, fruity, and more, each contributing to the overall scent profile of the perfume.

When we smell a perfume, our olfactory receptors detect these fragrance notes, which are released into the air from the skin or clothing where the perfume is applied. These notes can be perceived in layers, with top notes being the first impression, followed by heart notes and base notes that emerge over time as the perfume interacts with the skin's chemistry.

The olfactory experience of a perfume is subjective and can vary from person to person based on individual preferences, skin chemistry, and personal associations with certain scents. What may smell delightful to one person may not be as appealing to another due to these differences.

Perfume creators, known as perfumers, carefully blend different fragrance notes to achieve a harmonious and balanced olfactory composition. They consider factors such as the volatility of each note, its longevity on the skin, and how it interacts with other notes in the blend to create a cohesive and pleasing scent profile.

Overall, the olfactory aspect of perfume plays a crucial role in its appeal and can evoke a wide range of emotions, memories, and sensory experiences for both the wearer and those around them.
